It’s important that we set goals when it comes to healthy lifestyle changes; these give us something to aim for, they motivate us and keep us moving forward.
However, setting ourselves non-achievable, really difficult goals can have the opposite effect. And if we don’t have a time limit or a way to measure and see the progress we’re making we can lose motivation and find ourselves slipping back to old habits or giving up.
This is why we should set ourselves SMART goals - Goals that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound:
While the information is fresh in your memory, write down some SMART goals for you and your family.
You could give yourself a big goal, a medium goal and a then a weekly challenge – just make sure they’re SMART.
An example might be:
“In the next 6 months I want to lose X amount of weight (long -term big goal), to do this I’m going to eat more healthily and start walking/jogging. I’m going to complete the 9-week Couch to 5k running plan (medium-term goal). I am going to make sure I do 2 walks/runs this week, try one new healthy recipe and lose 2 pounds (short-term goals/weekly challenge)”
When thinking about changes to our lifestyles and setting new goals, it can be a bit overwhelming. Where do you start!? Always think of small, achievable steps and tweaks that are easy to make and likely to continue. If you need a little inspiration the Family Activity Grid can be a helpful place to start.
