  • Children and adolescents are particularly vulnerable to the effects of air pollution. Air pollution can increase the risk of disease later in life.
  • Improving air quality around child-centric settings like schools can help reduce their risk of exposure.
  • Reducing cars idling outside the school can support active travel and create a healthier environment around the school.

Helpful Resources:

Develop a school active travel plan to enable mobility and active forms of travel to and from school for all ages:

  • Active Travel (including Park and Stride) can complement other measures that schools have in place to manage a safe travel to and from school.
  • Encouraging students to walk, scoot and cycle can help reduce pressure on space as they arrive and leave. It also reduces congestion and air pollution at the school gate.
  • Forming active travel habits into daily routine can help reduce childhood obesity and contribute to the daily recommended levels of physical activity.
  • There are also initiatives such as School Streets that schools can apply for an example.
