Further Information:

Compassionate leadership and good people management promoting a culture of participation, equality, fairness and inclusion:

  • Is there a person dedicated to focussing on staff health and wellbeing?
  • Do you have a health and wellbeing group which can influence change?
  • Build a culture that champions good mental health and provides a greater understanding of how to help those who need more support.

Develop mentoring structures where appropriate or provide staff with confidential support and advice in relation to their health at work:

  • Mentoring in teaching provides experienced staff with the opportunity to guide and support others as they develop their skills and navigate the complexities working in a school.
  • Encourage staff to buddy up with colleagues to support each other in providing opportunities for reflective practice and problem-solving school-based challenges.

Encourage and support employees to walk or cycle to work:

  • If you would like to change the way your staff travel to work, you will find lots of great ideas and actions you can use. Start with a survey to explore how school staff travel to work, and explore the barriers preventing people from active travel.

  • Promote healthy eating by providing nutritious snacks in the staff room, offering nutrition workshops, or starting a school garden.
