Healthy Under 5s is a local health promotion programme that supports all early years childcare providers to become health promoting environments. Early years providers are in a unique position to highlight the importance of health and wellbeing to the children in their care, along with the parents, carers and their staff. Our Best Practice Guidelines cover six core topics and help you to reflect on your setting’s current approach to health promotion. The programme has been designed to celebrate topics that you may already be championing, explore new areas that could be included and help keep you informed of topical issues and guidance. Our Best Practice Guidelines complement and enhance the statutory Early Years Foundation Stage framework, allowing you to be creative in your approach to children, families and staff health and wellbeing. Your commitment to health promotion will ensure that every child has the best start in life.
Your Healthy Under 5s advisor will help you to reflect on your current approach to health improvement and, using a range of interactive resources and guidance, will support you to further embed health promotion into your practice. You will receive a poster of recognition to display which will celebrate your success on the programme and commitment to the topics outlined below.

Achievement will vary from setting to setting. It may take a few weeks, months or up to a year, depending on what health promotion activities are already in place. Once achieved, your poster of recognition is valid for one year but your advisor will still be available to support you and prepare for an annual review. Please be assured the aim of the programme is not to make extra work for you but simply embed health improvement within your day to day practice.
