The Safe Places scheme encourages people with a learning disability and/or Autistic people to be independent, and provides reassurance to their family and carers. Our CHAMPs Team, who help manage the scheme, says:
“This scheme helps people with a learning disability to go out and about on their own. It also helps parents of someone with a learning disability and/or autistic people to give them the confidence that their family member will be safe.”
Safe Places are businesses and services, which help people with a learning disability and/or Autistic people. The Safe Place calms the person and, if required, calls their contact person. This contact person is found written on their Safe Place card, that we encourage the person to carry.
The police are called if the person is in danger or they have reported bullying or harassment. For concerns about the person's welfare, we encourage the Safe Place to contact the Council’s Safeguarding Team.
Devon and Cornwall Police support the scheme.
